John Chipman
International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS)
Sir John Chipman KCMG is Executive Chairman of the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS). In his current role Chipman helps to maintain the Institute’s relationships with political and business leaders worldwide and to open up new markets.
Previously at IISS he was also Director General and CEO, as well as Research Associate, Deputy Director, and Director of Studies. As Director General of the IISS, he led the Institute’s global growth into the world’s premier institute providing facts and analysis on international security issues. The organisation also expanded from a small office in London to a large London headquarters, with international offices in Washington DC, Singapore, Manama, and Berlin. Chipman has extensive experience in international advisory and business management. He was a Research Associate at the Atlantic Institute for International Affairs in Paris and has served on several international advisory boards and corporate boards of directors. He is also a prominent lecturer in areas such as political risk, regional security, and global trends. He is the author of two books and numerous opinion pieces.
He holds a BA (Hons) from Harvard University, a MA (with distinction) from the London School of Economics (LSE), and an MA & PhD in Philosophy from Balliol College, Oxford. In June 2023, Chipman was made a Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) in His Majesty the King’s Birthday Honours in June 2023, having been made a Companion of the Order (CMG) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 1999.
