ABOUT ALBERTO

Alberto Ucelay is Director General for the Maghreb, the Mediterranean and the Middle East in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain. Ucelay served as the Ambassador of Spain to the Republic of Sudan from August 2018 to July 2021 and was also accredited to Eritrea.

In the central services of the Ministry in Madrid, he has served as the Head of the Legal, Social, and Humanitarian Affairs Department (1996) and Deputy Director General for the Middle East (2007-2009). He has been posted to the diplomatic missions of Spain in Gabon, with accreditation in São Tomé and Príncipe (1997-2000), Paraguay (2000-2003), and served as the Deputy Consul General in Jerusalem (2003-2006). He worked as an Advisor to the European Union Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process (2006-2007). He has also served as the Deputy Head of Mission at the embassies of Spain in Morocco (2010-2013), Kuwait (2013-2016), and Tunisia (2016-2018). He speaks Spanish, English, French, and Arabic.

A graduate in Law, he entered the diplomatic service in 1996.
