The ASEAN Economic Community was officially announced on 31 December 2015, signaling a significant breakthrough in a long term regional integration process that began almost fifty years ago in South East Asian. This region has experienced a dramatic development in the last decades, emerging as the 7th largest economy in the world, and likely climbing to the 4th place in the next decade. South East Asia is therefore one of the most dynamic regions of the world, but obviously underresearched in Spain. This makes particularly relevant the organization of seminars like the present one, gathering Spanish officials and experts with ASEAN diplomats to debate on the implications of such a significant development as the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community for the region and beyond.
Welcome remarks: Julio Luis Martínez Martínez, rector of Comillas Pontifical University. Presented by Charles Powell, director of the Elcano Royal Institute, and Nguyen Ngoc Binh, ambassador of Vietnam to Spain.
