Monday, 2nd December 2024, from 18:00 to 20:00 h. CET (UTC+1). Venue: Conference hall (Campus CSIC), c/ Serrano 117, Madrid.
Donald Trump’s new presidency in the United States, due to commence on 20 January 2025, will have profound consequences for American society, the European Union, and democracies worldwide. In a context characterised by growing social and political polarisation within contemporary societies, mounting pressure from major global challenges, and growing tensions in international governance structures, the direction of the US government will play a pivotal role in shaping the responses of other key international actors. It will also significantly influence the resolution of two major conflicts in Europe’s neighborhood—the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
This roundtable will analyse, from a variety of social science perspectives, the key factors that shaped the election results and the global implications of this new presidency, which are expected to become apparent throughout 2025. By examining topics such as the gender dimension, the politicisation of immigration and the management of the southern border, the voting behaviour of Hispanic minorities, and the economic and geopolitical ramifications of the election, the discussion aims to provide a multidimensional perspective on the potential consequences of Donald Trump’s second term in office for liberal democracies in the years ahead.
