The fight against terrorism in Spain has made the rehabilitation and reintegration of jihadist prisoners a key priority, aiming to encourage the abandonment of violence and ensure national security. The need to strengthen the assessment of the risk of recidivism among these inmates and to develop programs that facilitate their transition to life in freedom has intensified following the emergence of the Islamic State and the proclamation of its caliphate a decade ago, a phenomenon that has led to a significant increase in individuals linked to jihadist terrorism in European prisons, including those in Spain.

The Elcano Royal Institute seeks to contribute to addressing these security challenges with the monograph ‘Reaffirmation and abandonment of global Jihad. Personal trajectories of Jihadist prisoners in Spain’ by Vicente Álvaro, Analyst at Elcano, based on fieldwork conducted in numerous Spanish penitentiary centers. This report presents the findings of interviews with 24 jihadist prisoners, aiming to understand the complex processes that lead to the persistence or rupture with their extremist attitudes and to offer recommendations for a differentiated and comprehensive approach to their rehabilitation and resocialization.
