Various strains of Islamist extremism currently exist worldwide. These include global ones such as those associated to a resurging al-Qaeda and the expanded Islamic State. However, developments in the Middle East are reactivating the international influence of other groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. All these actors are related to a broad spectrum of terrorist activities in Western societies.
This new edition of the Elcano Forum on Global Terrorism aimed to analyze the current state of these Islamist extremist movements, as well as the challenges and threats they pose to the West. Additionally, it seeks to discuss the responses to these challenges and threats in Europe, both in terms of counterterrorism and radicalization prevention.
