Paul Isbell fue investigador sénior asociado del Real Instituto Elcano, e investigador principal de Economía Internacional (hasta 2012). Tambien es CAF Energy Fellow en el Centro para las Relaciones Transatlanticas (CTR) de la Universidad Johns Hopkins SAIS en Washington, D.C., y el director de investigación de los proyectos el Atlantic Basin Initiative (ABI) y el Atlantic Energy Forum (AEF). Ha sido Senior Visiting Fellow en el Inter-American Dialogue (IAD) en Washington, D.C., director del programa de Energía y Cambio Climático del Real Instituto Elcano (2009-2011), economista para Mercados Emergentes en el Banco Santander, y profesor de Economía Internacional y Geopolítica en varias universidades a lo largo de la Cuenca Atlántica (Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, ICADE-Pontificia Comillas, Syracuse University, George Washington University y el Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires).
